GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition

Dear participants of the GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition 2015,

In this second circular you will find further practical information about the GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition 2015.

Registration forms

Deadline for registration is 25.05.2015. Please fill all the required fields and make sure all names are written correctly to avoid complications during your travel. You can find registration forms at http://www.globe.ee/GRLE2015/ .

Travel
We kindly ask you to inform us of your travel itinerary as soon as possible so we can assist you in any way possible.

All tickets will be bought by GLOBE Estonia after registration has ended.

Pick-up of participants from Tallinn

On August 3, all participants will be taken to the location of the GRLE2015 with a bus organized by GLOBE Estonia. Bus will depart from Tallinn in the morning of August 3. There will be stops on the way and possibly some sight-seeing. All of the times will be included in the schedule, which will be sent to you with the 3rd circular.

Presentations by countries

We expect prepared performance from each delegation that would best showcase what the GLOBE Program has been up to in their countries. You could talk about Summer Camps, local research projects, data collection at schools, etc. The presentation can be in any shape or form. A projector will be available for usage. Each presentation should be 10 minutes long and does not have strict rules.

We expect your country to prepare one social activity (e.g national game) and carry it out on the first evening. The main aim of social evening is to build bridges between participants.

Accommodation and meals

The GRLE2015 will be held at Nelijärve, Harju county, Estonia. It is a quiet rural region, situated between four picturesque lakes and surrounded by high forests.

All participants of GRLE 2015 will be provided with full-board catering, covering all breakfasts, lunches, dinners. During your possible overnight stay in Tallinn due to travelling arrangements, we kindly ask you to provide dinner for yourself.

On location you will be accommodated in the hostel and cabin-houses of Nelijärve Recreational Centre in rooms of 2 and 3. You can find more information about the Centre here: http://www.nelijarve.ee/en/

Venue

The majority of events take place at the Nelijärve Recreational Centre, with only some of the expeditions going off campgrounds.

Lectures and presentations will be held indoors in a conference hall. Most events, including study-sessions and the expedition, will be outdoor activities.

Materials and preparation

Participants will be provided with all materials at the registration desk by the organizers.

We strongly advise participants to bring along comfortable and weather-proof clothing and shoes for outdoor activities.

GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition 2015

3-6. august 2015

Short description

GLOBE Estonia will welcome 200 participants in the Annual GLOBE Learning Expedition in Estonia. Over the course of 4 days we will learn how to collect various data, do fieldwork and how to present the results.

Day 1. Introduction day

each country will make a presentation introducing the GLOBE/environmental activities and research taking place in their countries

Day 2. Learning sessions – based on GLOBE data sheets, GLOBE field campaigns, extra attention paid on soil measurements, GLOBE games (fun tasks)

Day 3. Expedition – in 12 groups, each having different tasks and research questions, assisted by supervisors/experts

Day 4. Presentation and evaluation – based on the results of expedition;
We kindly ask you to discuss possibilities and let us know whether your delegation could participate in the GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition under the following conditions:
Participants
6 countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Russia, Finland

100 students from Estonia

GLOBE Alumni; teachers, supervisors

10 participants for each foreign delegation
Participant Requirements

Number of participants for each country is 10 (teachers and students together, at least 7 students). We kindly recommend involving students from different schools.

Students taking part in the GLRE2015 must fulfil the following requirements:

− have a strong interest in the GLOBE program;

− be able to communicate in English (some support available in Russian as needed)

− have an inclination towards teamwork and active participation;

− being present in GRLE2015 from 3rd to 6th of August.

− be students from grades 5-12 (Age 11-19); accompanying teachers

 

Travel

100% travel costs will be reimbursed on the basis of invoices, receipts, boarding passes, tickets and proofs of payment. While the travel budget is limited, please be considerate and reasonable. Subsistence is provided on full pension basis. The reimbursement requires full-term participation.

GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition 2015

3.-6. August 2015

Nelijärve, Estonia

To celebrate the GLOBE program’s 20th anniversary, GLOBE Estonia will be hosting an international summer expedition.

We would like to welcome participants from our region (Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Russia, Finland, Estonia) to take part in the GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition 2015, which will be held on 3.-6.August 2015 in Nelijärve, Estonia.

The main focus of the expedition is learning about the environment and Earth System sciences in a more hands-on fashion, enhance awareness and inspire the next generation of future scientists. The focal points of this year’s meet-up will be satellite and soil research.

Over the course of 4 days the participants will:

  • introduce GLOBE activities taking place in their countries,
  • learn how to fill and collect data for GLOBE protocols,
  • go on an expedition and do fieldwork into the surrounding nature,
  • and present the results of their fieldwork.

The participants will engage in thrilling teamwork and group activities (such as approaching an environment-related topics through acting, GLOBE games and socializing activities),  learn from professionals working in the fields of satellite and soil science, as well as taking environmental measurements during the fieldwork. Experts from Estonia and abroad will guide the participants on their 4-day journey and explain the significance of GLOBE data collection

The aim of the GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition 2015 is regional networking to promote STEM education via increased participation in the GLOBE program by linking it with scientific institutions dealing with environmental issues important to the region.

May it be noted here that the official communication language of the GLOBE Regional Learning Expedition is English, however support will be available also in Russian.
